Some of those places don't have many prisoners because they shoot them in the head.

These statistics include detainees[illegal immigrants] awaiting transportation back to their home countrys which are around 35,000-50,000 not including the illegal immigrants that are in actual prisons serving time for their various crimes which after they finish serving time they will be shipped back to their home countrys.Most of em will fight to stay here as they are more afraid of their own country then our jails.Cant find any stats on that but im sure the number is overwhelming.

Also take a look at the russian federation which is also in the red now check out how many born russians are american citizens

The point is...We have the highest immigration rate in the u.s while other countrys have basically zelch.Take the immigrants out of the equation and our numbers would be down considerably.

lando, I've just spent the weekend with a friend and we had some really intelligent convesation (although admittedly that declined on the Saturday night after the alcohol consumtion began), and then I come back to this drivel! You make a statement about immigrants being the cause of the high prison population in the US, then back that up with one case, and a graph from wikipedia about where US residents were born. How does that support your statement? Before you spout off your bigotted ideas do some serious research. Did you even go to the website that the map comes from? It redirected me to another site that has taken over and their latest data excludes detainees that are not covered by criminal prison administrations. Even if there were 50,000 included in the figures as you claim (where does this figure come from?), based on their 2007 numbers the US would still be in the 500+ prisoners per 100,000 population category!

Grow a brain, stop looking for scapegoats and/or easy solutions and be prepared for hard work if you actually want to do something about the problem.

And aonther thing lando, my country allows approx 50,000 immigrants in per year and we have a total population of about 4.5 million, while the US has a annual immigration allowance of approx 100,000. The US has a total population of approx 300 million. Your claim that the US has the highest immigration rate while other countries have 'zelch' (I presume you mean zilch) is therefore refuted.

You have to remember that unless you are native American Indian either you or your family were immigrants at some stage.

Apologies for the agressive approach last time. Have read your posting from Homeland Security. Even if their higher number of 450,000 was correct, based on the 2007 information from the prisonstudies.org website (or at least the site that one now redirects to) from the original map posted, excluding those illegal immigrants would still give the USA a prison population rate of 608 per 100,000 of the total population. That would put the US into second place behind the Russian Federation on 611.

I still believe you need to look for other causes beyond illegal immigration for the true cause of the high US prison population. By blaming one issue alone you are oversimplifying the situation.
