a pair of unusual trilobites termed "sail-spined" by some due to the dramatic row of axial spines found in this species. While some are larger, these are in an excellent state of preservation, sure to become the cornerstone of any trilobite collection. They are well matched in size, and the different poses show off their spiny armament to good advantage. These spines were a good defense against the fish of their day, affording quite a mouthful for any predator with the temerity to attack

I was wondering what level of evolution they became and if they continued to something more modern or if they simple went extinct.

it's hard to say that they would have evolved a certain way w/o knowing their mating habits, life span, environment changes, was food plentiful in their environment, the list goes on and on. the only thing you can suppose about the life and times of any extinct animals is what they were found with. you could say that the spines wre for grown for defense or maybe as a show of manhood for mating purposes. any more is just speculation.

So there isn't much to trilobyte geneology then. other than it's low aptitude for negotiating a rock in its path or something perhaps with motivation?

I wouldn't swim at Rooster Rock if my life depended on it, PLP.

Best be careful where you sit down out there. Bound to get a used hypodermic needle stuck in your ass.

That's pretty awesome. We found some of those in a quarry when I was a mere lad. Back in Ohio I believe. Or maybe Georgia. Can't remember. My dad used to drag me and my brothers to all those places when we were kids. It wasn't till I was older that I really learned to appreciate it. thumbs
