Why would the living area need to be a sphere? It seems that a cylinder would
be more logical since centrifugal force would only create "artificial
gravity" along the interior walls of the craft as it rotates. The closer
you got to the axis, the less "gravity" there would be -- so the
sphere might as well be a cylinder.

But a sphere would give you the centrifugal "gravity" in the middle,
and a nice, even gradation of that gravity towards the ends... so you wouldn't
have the shock of doing something at 1.0 Earth Gravity, and then suddenly moving
to 0.2 Earth Gravity when you exit a cylinder. Just a thought.
Pretty picture though.
