to get rid of those pesky icons:
aplications > sys tool > configuration editor: apps > nautilus >
uncheck the boxes
i suggest you leave volumes checked!
to hide the panel better on auto hide:
apps > panel > top levels > top (or bottom - or both) and change auto
hide size value to 0 by right click > edit... you can also toy with the delay
time and different thingies better than you can by just editing the panel
settings directly
you also may have to right click on applications > edit menus, on the left
side select system tools and check the box beside configuration editor in new
releases of ubuntu
in later version of fc you will need to install configuration editor

them on my lower panel, and top one i put on auto hide(used to do lower as
well...)

Being aesthetically inclined, I can appreciate the "beauty" of the
design, but since I have lived for a number of years under a communist regime, I
abhor it!
It is an appealing idea, but in practice it has killed more people than fascism
(which is just as bad a system!).
In Europe we like to say;
If you are young and not a communist, you have no heart,
if you are older and still a communist, you have no brain!

ha!
either you are a bourgeois propaganda machine, or you are refering to
stalinism...
i prefer the latter as i am for some reason(purpose) an optomistic...
